What Vertical Do You Need to Dunk? Every Height From 5'6" to 6'6"
The exact vertical jump needed to dunk at 5'6", 5'8", 5'10", 6'0", 6'2", 6'4" and 6'6" β standing and running, one-hand and two-hand, with the reach numbers behind each figure.
"Can I dunk at 5'10?" is the wrong question. The right one is "what is my standing reach, and how far is it from 126 inches?" β because two players at the same height can need verticals that differ by four or five inches.
Still, height is what people know, so here is the honest answer for every common height, along with the reach assumption behind it. If your arms are longer or shorter than average, your real number will differ β and you can get your exact figure in about 30 seconds by entering a measured reach.
The one-hand dunk table
These are standing verticals for a one-hand dunk on a regulation 10-foot rim, using a reach estimated at height Γ 1.33. Take about 4 inches off each figure for a running approach.

For context: the average untrained adult has a standing vertical around 20 inches, and a typical NBA standing vertical is about 28 inches.
What each height actually means
5'6" β 38 inches standing. This is elite territory. A 38-inch standing vertical is above NBA average, so dunking at 5'6" on a regulation rim is genuinely rare and takes years. On a 9-foot rim the same player needs about 26 inches, which is very achievable.
5'8" β 35.6 inches standing. Still a serious athletic outlier, but it happens. With a running approach the target drops to about 31.6 inches, which trained jumpers reach.
5'10" β 32.9 inches standing, 28.9 running. This is the height where dunking flips from "rare" to "realistic with work." A 29-inch running vertical is roughly NBA-average, and plenty of recreational 5'10" athletes get there.
6'0" β 30.2 inches standing, 26.2 running. A 26-inch running vertical is a genuinely attainable target for most healthy adults inside a year of structured training. If you are 6'0" and cannot dunk yet, you are usually closer than you think.
6'2" and up. At 6'2" the running target is 23.6 inches β near the untrained average. From 6'4" upward, the required numbers fall below what many people already jump, which is why the limiting factor at those heights is usually technique and ball control rather than raw hops.
Two-hand dunks add three inches
Everything above assumes a one-hand dunk, which needs about 6 inches of clearance over the rim. A two-hand dunk needs roughly 9 inches, because both arms have to clear it for control. So add 3 inches to every figure in the table:
- 5'10" two-hand: 35.9" standing, 31.9" running
- 6'0" two-hand: 33.2" standing, 29.2" running
- 6'2" two-hand: 30.6" standing, 26.6" running
Target the one-hand threshold first. It is the cheapest entry into dunking, and the two-hand version becomes a milestone rather than a barrier.
Why the estimate might be wrong for you
The height Γ 1.33 ratio is a population average. Real reaches scatter around it by several inches in both directions, driven by arm length, torso proportions, and shoulder mobility.
That scatter is not a rounding error β it is often the whole gap. A 6'0" player with a 99-inch reach needs a 27-inch vertical. A 6'0" player with a 93-inch reach needs 33 inches. Same height, six inches of difference, entirely invisible if you only look at the height column.
